Walton County Jail Overview

Walton County Jail, also called Walton County Detention Center in sheriff materials, is operated by the Walton County Sheriff's Office. The WCSO Jail Division page says the division is responsible for safety and supervision of inmates and daily jail operations, including booking, feeding, recreation, medical appointments, inmate visitation, inmate services, and attorney visitation. The Georgia Department of Corrections county-jail contact page identifies the facility as Walton County Jail in Monroe.

The facility type is county jail. The research did not locate a formal security classification, pod map, or full architectural profile for the current facility in the reviewed sheriff or GDC sources. The public roster covers current county-jail inmates, not sentenced state-prison custody after transfer to GDC.

The weekly purchase maximum is $150, and WCSO says no inmate may have more than $250 on the account at any given time. JailATM is linked by WCSO for deposits. Mail rejection and seized-contraband review have timing details on the WCSO jail page. The JailATM electronic notice process gives the sender and intended recipient three calendar days to request review, and the reviewer responds within ten days. The same page also contains older or general admin-review language with a seven-calendar-day written-notice period, so the two timeframes should not be merged.

Walton County Jail Services

WCSO states that medical services are provided by medically trained personnel under a licensed physician. Emergency treatment may require transport to a hospital or medical facility. Sick call is requested through a kiosk and collected daily. An inmate-initiated medical request carries a $5 charge deducted from the inmate account, but WCSO says medical will still see an inmate without funds.

Food service includes three meals daily under County Health Department-approved conditions, with menus certified for minimum daily adult requirements. Religious services may be held twice weekly, and requests for minister conferences or religious rites must be submitted in writing. Pastoral visits are coordinated through Captain Ben Cornelius at 770-266-1543. Personal property left after transfer or sentencing must be picked up within 10 days after the inmate leaves the detention facility or it will be disposed of.

Walton County Jail Booking

WCSO confirms booking as a jail function, and the roster fields show how booking becomes public. The public record can include date confined, incarceration date, arrest date, arrest type, arrest agency, arrest location, offense date, offense description, related incident, court, court reference, bail amount, bail type, and housing location. Medical screening, housing assignment, and first appearance happen outside the simple row shown on the public list.

Uniform Superior Court Rules and O.C.G.A. ยง 17-4-62 make early court timing important. Unless bond has already been made, a person arrested without a warrant must be brought before a judicial officer within 48 hours, and a person arrested with a warrant within 72 hours under the rule. Bond terms can change at that stage, so call the jail before using a cached roster amount.

Walton County Jail History

Walton County's jail-studies page documents a long public planning history. Discussions for a new or upgraded jail began in 2009. Grand-jury summaries in 2010 and 2011 recorded inmate counts above the 376-bed facility and emphasized the need for more space. In 2013, the county described overcrowding as untenable and said overflow was managed by using Barrow and Oglethorpe Counties for a daily fee.

Later summaries described facility-design concerns such as poor sightlines from control rooms, lack of cell-door visibility, limited natural light, no program spaces near pods, electrical capacity issues, plumbing failures, insufficient suicide-resistant spaces, door-lock problems, leaks, understaffing, psychological housing needs, and protected housing concerns. In 2021, county materials said a new Public Safety Complex and jail had become urgent. Walton County announced on October 3, 2025 that Baker Street opened to connect the new Sheriff's Office and Jail complex to Highway 78.

The Baker Street county news screenshot below documents recent access changes tied to the new jail and sheriff complex.
